The Ratskeller – Traditional gastronomy with a modern interpretation

In the heart of Stuttgart, DIA - Dittel Architekten has successfully completed the core renovation of the Ratskeller. In the cellar of the town hall, Swabian culture receives a new and modern image with a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Due to its prominent location in the heart of Stuttgart’s old town, the traditional restaurant is a central meeting place and contributes to a sustainable revitalization of the cityscape thanks to its recent modernization. Since December 2021, it has been inviting visitors to experience the “stories of yesteryear with dishes of today”.

The basic idea of the renovation was to translate traditional tavern and restaurant elements into a modern context and to simultaneously play with charming and stylish gastronomy concepts. A symbiosis of tradition and modernity come together through the complementary combination of industrial elements with high-quality materials consisting of both light and dark wood in cheerful, warm shades.

The formerly small-scale and private cellar now opens up to Hirschstrasse and the market square. The entrance area via the gallery provides a view of the open space and the sociable happenings in the Ratskeller. The barrier-free staircase leads guests to the open and inviting lounge area of the restaurant. High-quality armchairs with nut-brown leather upholstery and detailed golden walls introduce the warm color range of the restaurant and direct the guests’ eyes to the centerpiece of the room, the house bar. The bar itself has a raw industrial design and sets with modern accents in a traditional ambience. Adjacent to the bar, counter-height tables and chairs in light, natural wood look provide further seating options.

Black lattice, specially designed for the Ratskeller and to store the restaurant beer, acts as an exciting, centrally located room divider and leads to the raised area on the opposite side. Here, dining niches with dark real wood paneling and upholstery in antique gold offer inviting and friendly seating, while the suspended gold-colored metal grid ceiling with individually arranged lightbulbs provides for a pleasant lighting atmosphere. The modern wall fresco contributes a charming ambience to the room and reminds guests of the long history and tradition of the Ratskeller.

Konferenzraum

The concept is seamlessly continued in the large, multifunctional conference room: Circular ceiling lights in a modern look contrast with the high-quality, dark wooden furniture and complement each other in an inviting spatial composition. The flexible wall fixture allows the room to be divided up for large meetings and events or small celebrations.
