Holistic refurbishment & new conception of the gastronomy in the listed Kurhaus Baden-Baden

The listed Kurhaus Baden-Baden is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and, in the course of a holistic renovation and redesign by DIA - Dittel Architekten, receives a modernized gastronomy and store area with a high-quality appearance on more than 600 square meters. The landmark captivates as a historical heart of the city with its classicist architecture and is considered a very special cultural monument of the spa town with its noble exterior and cityscape-defining effect.

The new design fits into the overall architectural-historical context, interprets the identity of Baden-Baden in a modern way analogous to the Baden-regional cuisine and makes creative reference to the surrounding Black Forest. The interplay of modern elements, exciting lighting design and historical inventory radiates coziness, modernity and exclusivity and results in an inviting room composition.

Hectors: Spatial dialog between history and modernity

Inspired by the composer Hector Berlioz, the Kurhaus restaurant has been given its new name “HECTORS”. As in the music, the focus in the restaurant will in future be on enjoyment. Many elements that are more than a hundred years old are a defining element of the new concept and tell the story of the building. Golden accents and brass details, as well as the square design language are recurring and flow characteristically through all areas. The square parquet coffers, as well as the existing marble floor, were refurbished in accordance with historic preservation standards and harmoniously integrated into the design concept as existing elements. The coffered ceiling in classicist style receives the attention it deserves through modern lighting and lends the area an unmistakable ambience.

Changing accent colors define the spatial zoning and the different usage spectrums of the interior design: while dark blue defines the restaurant and café area, dark green was chosen for the lounge and Bordeaux for the separee. Room dividers made of brass filled with textured glass are oriented to the walkways, provide intimacy without restricting the openness of the areas in their development and act as a connecting element.

With the different seating areas, the space offers a high quality of stay for every type of dwell time: At cozy side tables, classically elevated at the bar or in comfortable sofas, guests can participate in the social events, enjoy the diverse gastronomic offerings and relax in the exclusive flair.

Confectionery – Shop

Friendly color nuances, with accents in gold, introduce the entrance area to the store and continue the color scheme of the restaurant and café area. An appealing presentation of goods attracts the attention of guests as they enter and directs their gaze to the various regional products. The back wall in grid structure serves as an exciting eye-catcher and flows harmoniously into the square ceiling panels. Here, customers can indulge in the homemade confectionery products and a wide variety of delicacies.

Restaurant

In the modernized restaurant area, guests can immerse themselves in the multifaceted culinary delights and linger in comfort. A harmonious triad of dark blue, golden brass and light gray determines the color scheme and results in a friendly ambience.  The ensemble of modern accents and classicistic elements ,such as the listed Doric columns, creates a unique atmosphere with a strong exterior effect that invites guests in and draws them inside.

Heritage Bar & Lounge

In the evening hours, guests will in future be welcomed in the modern “Heritage” Bar & Lounge. The modern-looking bar in the entrance opens the new area and leads interested visitors inside. Present and centrally positioned, the bar acts as an impressive eye-catcher thanks to its counter cladding in brown round wood. Brass details in the base, shadow gap and bar board continue the guiding material design. As a unifying element, the bar area picks up on the gray furnishings of the lounge and the blue color scheme of the restaurant. As a smart detail, the mobile radiators can be flexibly removed in summer, allowing a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces through the open windows.

The lounge area is comfortably furnished with sofas and is set in an exclusive atmosphere by accents in dark green and atmospheric lighting. The homeland reference to the Black Forest can be experienced through the color scheme and cleverly allows the identity of the surroundings to flow into the design concept. The tiled stove. clad in glazed, handmade ceramic tiles, sets an accent in petrol and lends the room coziness. It is only when you sit down that another clever detail unfolds: the elevation provided by the platform floor allows you to look directly through the bar into the long colonnades of the Kurhaus garden.

Separee

The open-plan interior design creates lines of sight to all areas, yet keeps the secluded Separee area intimate. Here, confident accents and Bordeaux seating play with guests’ perceptions, giving the space a personal and intimate setting. The Separee can be used flexibly for private celebrations or opened up to the bar by the flexible partition.
