Retail

On 8 April 2025, the new Breuninger Flagship Store opened its doors in the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier – a milestone for the fashion and lifestyle company, marking its first brick-and-mortar retail outlet in the north of Germany and covering more than 13,000 square metres over three floors.

The holistic retail concept was created by London based Cardy Papa who undertook LPH 1–3 (Basic Evaluation, Preliminary and Design Planning and Development), following which DIA were responsible for LPH 4–9 (Planning Permission, Construction Planning, Tendering & Award Support, Site Supervision)

The store redefines the shopping experience, combining curated brand worlds, innovative design, and exclusive services; and positions Hamburg as a distinctive hotspot for fashion and lifestyle within the European context. Located directly on the Elbe River, it invites visitors not only to shop but also to linger – becoming a stage for inspiring brand presentations and emotional retail design. Traditional retail is reimagined here as a vibrant meeting place, defined by clear orientation, functional precision, and strong atmospheric impact.

THE STORE AS A WORLD OF EXPERIENCES

Spatial design as a key to a successful retail concept
In times of growing online commerce, brick-and-mortar formats are under increasing pressure. Today’s shoppers expect more than just products – they seek experiences, inspiration, and environments that offer both comfort and orientation. The store responds to these demands with a spatial dramaturgy based on four guiding principles: Attraction, Discover, Assist, and Service. These structure the space, create brand proximity, and intuitively guide visitors through the offering. The design follows this concept down to the last detail, striking a thoughtful balance between inspiring presentation, efficient merchandising, and personalized engagement – from impulse purchases to bespoke service.

MATERIALS & COLOURS

Attraction – Materials & Color Palette: A Dialogue with the City
The Cardy Papa concept narrative for the flagship store draws inspiration from Hamburg’s maritime heritage and industrial aesthetic. The striking Corten steel façade references the dynamic port environment and gives the building a strong urban presence. Inside, this design language continues: grey terrazzo flooring, raw concrete columns, and warm metal tones form an atmospheric foundation. A subtle color palette provides a calm stage for product presentation – precisely accentuated with bold colors in the interior fittings.

DIGITALISATION, SERVICE AND A REAL EXPERIENCE

DiscoverA Multi-Sensory Shopping Experience
Each floor of the store presents a uniquely curated brand universe. Spacious lounges, comfortable seating areas, and interactive zones invite visitors to linger and explore. Shopping here becomes a multi-sensory experience – with places for connection, inspiration, and stylish exchange.

Assist – Digitally Enhanced, Spatially Integrated
Digital touchpoints are precisely integrated into the spatial layout, enriching the shopping experience with interactive, personalized features – without dominating the space. This integration reflects Breuninger’s multichannel strategy and the fusion of online and offline worlds within the store’s design.

Service – Personal, Premium, Tailored
At Breuninger, service is more than a promise – it is a central design element. Tailored shopping experiences meet the individual needs of customers. A highlight is the “Special Service” with private suites where wardrobes are curated upon request. High-quality furniture, carpets, and warm wood surfaces create an exclusive yet welcoming atmosphere.

This offering is complemented by the in-house alteration atelier “b_tailored” on the second floor – directly integrated into the sales area. Here, customers can have garments tailored to fit and experience the craftsmanship live. Specially trained style experts guide the selection process and help create individual looks from the diverse brand portfolio.

A New Landmark in Hamburg’s Urban Landscape

The Breuninger Flagship Store in the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier is more than a shopping destination – it is a forward-looking space for fashion, lifestyle, and human interaction. With its architectural presence, sensory spatial design, and premium service, it sets new standards in brick-and-mortar retail – inspiring, emotionally engaging, and unforgettable.
